Training Kids for Jobs That Don't Exist Yet: Are We Getting It Backwards?

A California program trained 173 students for lithium industry jobs. Only 16 got them. The pattern repeats with every new industry. Here is what Globeskool thinks schools should be building instead.

The Certificate That Beat the Job

The Hechinger Report published a story worth sitting with. In California’s Imperial Valley, colleges built workforce certification programs aimed squarely at an emerging lithium industry. One hundred and seventy-three students enrolled. As of Fall 2025, sixteen had found jobs directly tied to those certificates. The programs are now being scaled back.

Betony Jones, a senior researcher at the UC Berkeley Labor Center, described this outcome as “incredibly common.” Solar. Advanced manufacturing. Blockchain. The job doesn’t arrive when the certificate does. The curriculum gets written around a timeline the industry never agreed to.

Now look at what is forming around AI credentials for kids. “Teach your child prompt engineering” courses are everywhere. Some are genuinely useful. But the underlying assumption is identical to the one that produced the Lithium Valley situation: pick a job title, build a pipeline to it, and trust that the world holds still long enough for that bet to pay off.

It has not held still. It will not.

The Problem Is the Assumption, Not the Industry

This is not a lithium story. It is not an AI story. It is a structural education story that keeps getting told with a new industry name in the headline.

The assumption driving it goes something like this: if we can identify what the economy will need in five years, we can train kids to fill that slot, and everything works out. That assumption has two problems. First, predicting which specific roles will exist in five years is genuinely hard, and the track record of institutions doing it is not strong. Second, even when the prediction is roughly right, the timing, the scale, and the specific skills required rarely land the way the curriculum assumed.

Job-specific credentials are brittle by design. They are built to fit one context. When that context shifts, the credential shifts with it, except the kid is left holding it.

What Does Not Expire

Here is the harder question the Hechinger story raises without quite asking it directly: what would it look like to prepare a kid for a future nobody can predict with confidence?

The answer is not to stop teaching technology. A kid who cannot navigate digital tools is genuinely disadvantaged. The answer is about what the kid is doing with the tool.

There is a real difference between a kid who has memorized a set of prompts for a specific AI application and a kid who understands enough about how these systems work to pick up the next version, or the next tool entirely, within a week. The first kid learned a job task. The second kid learned something transferable.

The skills that have consistently survived waves of economic disruption are not tied to any one industry. They look more like this:

  • Problem framing. Knowing how to define what you are actually trying to solve before reaching for any tool.
  • Learning under uncertainty. Being comfortable picking up something unfamiliar and working through it without a complete map.
  • Critical thinking. Not accepting the first answer, the loudest voice, or the most confident-sounding output.
  • Communication. Being able to explain what you figured out to someone who does not already know it.

These are not soft skills. They are some of the hardest capabilities to build deliberately, and most schools do not teach them as a primary subject. They get squeezed into the margins, if they appear at all.

Why Starting at 8 Matters
